Blakely Jo

Hello 2016!  Ok, so I'm just about a month and a half late ... but better late than never, right??  One of my goals for 2016 is to be a better blogger ... and I couldn't think of a better way to kick off the new year with this darling girl, Blakely Jo. .

Blakely was the sweetest little thing, and was so content in the warm studio ... she made my job way too easy!  During newborn sessions I invite parents to bring something special that they would like their new baby photographed with.  Blakely's mom and dad asked that we incorporate a handmade blanket that was a gift to them, and as soon as I saw it I knew exactly what I was going to do with it :)  This family loves everything outdoors and Blakely is sure to fall right in line hunting, fishing, hiking, snowmobiling, the list goes on ... so the elk print blanket couldn't have been more perfect!

Peter and Kaitlyn, thank you so much for sharing your darling girl with me.  I cherished our time together, and cannot wait to watch Blakely grow up as the newest addition to your wonderful family!

This sweet family is such a joy to photograph, and I feel so fortunate that photography has brought them into my life.  These boys are so lucky to have Sara and Chad as their parents, and the love they share shines through in every picture.  This session was an extra special one, as we brought along a small bouquet to honor Chad and Sara's little girl who was born sleeping.  She is, and always will be such a huge part of this family, and letting her spirit shine through was so moving for me.  I am beyond grateful for the relationships I have created with my clients,  and am blessed to call Sara my friend. .

Spending time with the Harris family is always such a treat, and the weather for our session could not have been more beautiful!  The Pacific Northwest isn't always kind to us in the Fall ... but thankfully mother nature cooperated (and then some) and this September evening had me clinging to Summer sun, warmth, and light!  These brothers are just the sweetest duo, and they kept me busy throwing rocks, running races, and laughing all session long! .

Thank you Bobbie and Jake for sharing your precious family with me, I can't wait to see you all again!

As summer slows slinks away, and we begin to turn our heads to the fall and winter, I am so excited to be scheduling more family sessions.  I have to admit however, I may go kicking and screaming into fall this year, not because I don't love it ... but because I am not ready to let go of the gorgeous summer we were blessed with in the Pacific Northwest.  Oh well, the days pass by and I'll eventually come to grips with the changing seasons. .

Speaking of days passing by, I feel like it was yesterday that we were doing Lucas's 6 month session found here ... so when Adele contacted me about doing his 1 year pictures I nearly spit out my water; how can it be that in a blink of an eye, this little guy is ONE?!  Not to mention big sister Ashlynn who is already FOUR!  These kiddos are so close in age to my own babies, that I can't help but draw on the similarities between them ... one and four are such fun ages, and boy did we have fun at this photo session!

.

I so enjoy each time that I see the Barborinas Family!  Thank you Zach and Adele for sharing your family with me, am already looking forward to our next session :)

Oh my gosh, sweet Annie ... I just adore you!  Annie's beautiful mama is my baby cousin (seriously ... I used to play house and use Nellie and her twin sister as my real-life doll babies), and I couldn't be happier for this new little family.  I was so excited when they said they wanted to drive 2+ hours to Bellingham for a newborn session, and for the record ... they seriously made the whole traveling with an infant look way too easy!  I so, so enjoyed my time snuggling this precious new addition to the family while catching up with Nellie and Andrew.  If one thing is for certain Annie Girl ... you are one blessed little baby, you have the most amazing parents who love you to the moon and back! .

Thank you Nellie and Andrew for sharing your little darling with me ... I can't wait to see you all again very soon!

Maddy is a senior at Stanwood High School, so I was so excited when she contacted me to do her senior pictures!  We had so much fun chatting about school, golf, dances, and the future ... it just took me back to my senior year, and I can't help but share Maddy's excitement for the next chapter of her life!  The weather was perfect on the Semiahmoo Spit and we capped off the night as the sun set at Loomis Trail Golf Course.  This sweet girl is as beautiful inside as she is out, and I am so excited to see where this world takes her. .

Happy Birthday Farah! | Bellingham Child Photographer

Oh our sweet, sweet, Farah ... today you are FOUR! .

As I sat at my computer ... I struggled to find words that adequately describe our darling girl.  So I turned to her favorite book "Madeline" for some creative inspiration.

.

FERRIGAN

.

In a little house in Bellingham

that was tucked amongst the trees

.

Lived a family of four and a million golf tees.

.

This family of four made sure the books were read

they said their prayers

and went to bed.

.

They smiled at the good

And frowned at the bad

And more often than not they were all very glad.

.

They had so much fun, again and again

sometimes they'd grin

even over a bit of a sin

.

the FOUR year old was Ferrigan.

.

She was not afraid of slides

she loved summer, sun, and bike rides.

.

To the neighborhood deer

Ferrigan said 'hey you, I'm over here!'

.

And even when she was in a funk hole

She warmed our family's heart and soul.

.

It wasn't that long ago

Although we wish the time would slow

The first time we got to say 'hello'.

.

Little Ferrigan swaddled tight

Made everything in the world seem right.

.

And soon after we brought her home

We knew never again would we be alone.

.

We laughed

We cried

Every day our hearts were bursting with pride.

..

Outside were birds, trees and sky

And so four years passed quickly by.

.

One nice morning on August thirteen

It was time for a birthday fit for a queen.

.

Or maybe a princess ... let's not be overly ambitious.

.

'This little girl is FOUR'

Read a sign outside her door.

.

Bounding in with balloons and more

So much love and giggles galore.

.

So as this day comes to an end

And we wait for another to begin again

.

This family of four makes sure the books are read

they say their prayers

and go to bed.

.

But before we turn in for the night

We make sure to recite

.

The last line of Ferrigan's favorite story

The one we have memorized in all of it's glory.

.

'Good night, little girls!

Thank the Lord you are well!

And now go to sleep, said Miss Clavel.

And she turned out the light,

And closed the door,

And that's all there is, there isn't any more.'

.

Happy, Happy Birthday to our darling Ferrigan Christine.

Oh how I adore these two kiddos ... I have known Lane and Quinn their whole lives, and much like I feel with my own kids - these two are growing WAY too fast!  We met up one morning for a quick photo session at a local park and we had so much fun playing in the water!  Thankfully their mama thought to bring several changes of clothes, because they both took a plunge or two during our time together.  The session was full of giggles, splashing, and great conversation! .

I can't wait to see these cuties again to see what kind of mischief we can make during our next session :)

Dante's session was such a special one for me (broken record alert ... I think I say that at every session!) Not only was Dante's big sister one of my very first newborn sessions just two short years ago in which I collaborated with two of my favorites Kamriell Welty and Jennifer Morrow; but also do you remember the little darling Presley that I blogged about here?  Well, Dante and Presley are cousins, born only 3 days apart!  So naturally, I begged asked Presley's parents to bring her by the studio at the beginning of the session so I could get a few cousin pictures (I may or may not have pretended they were twins :) but that is neither here nor there).  Dante was such a sweet boy for his session and was happy as a clam snuggling with his big sister Giana.  I know for certain that those two will be the best of friends growing up! .

I am so excited that my little business is now in a place where I am beginning to see 2nd children being born to the families in which I photograph.  It is wonderful watching families grow right alongside Jessie Bennett Photography.  I am so happy with the growth that I have seen in my work over the last couple of years, and I look forward to continuing to challenge myself with each new and returning client.

.

Thank you Caitlin and Rory for giving me the opportunity to capture your sweet little family of four!

Oh sweet Presley ... the newest addition to second generation friendships for my kiddos :) .

This little snuggly thing was an absolute dream to have in the studio for her newborn session.  She was so sleepy, so relaxed, and that hair ... a photographer's dream!  Presley's daddy is one of my husband's oldest friends, and his new little family of three has just moved back to Bellingham.  We are so excited to have them close by for play dates, birthday parties, and bbq's ... to watch our kids grow up together, just like their daddy's did so many years ago.  As a photographer I get so, SO excited to book a newborn session ... they are easily one of my favorites, and getting to spend the day with friends makes it even better!

.

Miles and Aimee, I could not be happier for you two.  Your sweet Presley is such a little blessing in so many people's lives, and I am so, so grateful that I get to be part of her life.

Nora was such a darling during her photo session; and it was so much fun snuggling her just 4 short days after she was born.  I was blessed to be able to photograph Nora's birth store, which you can read about here, and having her in the studio for newborn photos was so special.  I have been so blessed to get to know this family over the past couple months, as Megan and I were in constant contact in the weeks and days leading up to little Nora's birth.  I am so glad that they asked me to capture this very exciting time as they grew from a family of three to four.  Big brother Henry was just as cute as can be, and I have no doubt that he and Nora will share a very special sibling bond.

Having Remi in the studio for her newborn session was such a treat!  It never ceases to amaze me how quickly newborns change, and getting to document Remi's time in the hospital at just a few hours old (which can be seen here) and then again 11 days later at her newborn session really reminded me of how quickly it all goes!  This little gal didn't want to close her eyes at the beginning of the session ... I think she already knows that as the youngest of three girls, there's no time to sleep for fear of missing out on something :)  However as the session went on, she decided to cave to a good ol' nap and was the perfect little model! .

Thank you again to Rory and Tricia for sharing your beautiful family with me.  I look forward to seeing you all again very soon!

The Pulley Family | Bellingham Family Photographer

Pulley-3.jpg

When these three sisters contacted me about doing a family session as a gift to their parents, I was so excited!  Not only was I lucky enough to capture this beautiful, growing family; I was able to catch up with old friends.  I have known this group since grade school, and many of the memories I have of school musicals and bus rides include the girls. .

We decided to do an extended family session at their property and I had to chuckle when I received the driving directions which read 'You'll turn down a gravel road that you think leads to no where ... just keep going, I promise we'll be out there'.  And I must admit, about a mile into the winding gravel road I thought I had taken a wrong turn.  Shortly thereafter the trees parted and I caught a glimpse of the most darling little cabin sitting at the edge of a beautiful lake complete with docks and diving board!  Yes folks, I do believe I have been introduced to a new little slice of Pacific Northwest heaven.

.

The conversation was wonderful, the weather was perfect, and the scenery gorgeous ... I didn't want the session to end!  I could have stayed all day, snapping away as I watched this beautiful family interact with each other.  I am so grateful for the gift of photography, and feel blessed that it allows me to connect (and reconnect) with amazing people like the Pulleys (and Stevens, Pendergrast, and Parrett families).  Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share in the joy that is your family!

.

... and I was only half kidding about randomly showing up at the cabin with my family this summer, consider this your warning ;)

Maui Mini Sessions

Shapiro-13-Ben-Photo.jpg

A few weeks ago I found myself in paradise, Maui to be exact ... on a #mauimommytimeout (for those of you who follow me on Instagram) I spent a glorious week in Hawaii with my sister and dad on a once in a lifetime trip, surfing, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, pooling, water-sliding, eating, drinking, sunning ... SO MUCH FUN.  I kept having to pinch myself and kept asking 'how did I get so lucky?' well, I actually knew the answer to that ... my rockstar sister qualified for the trip through work and when her husband couldn't go along (poor guy) she extended an invitation to me and our dad!  I could go on and on about how wonderful it all was, and spending quality time just the three of us was truly a gift!  .

I schlepped along my camera with every intention of bringing it along everywhere we went ... however it ended up not leaving the hotel room until our last evening when I offered to do some beach sessions for some of the families we were vacationing with.  I was so glad when the Crabtree and Shapiro families took me up on my offer, and had a blast with each group.  There is something to be said for taking family pictures while on vacation ... everyone was so laid back, really enjoying each others company, and it didn't hurt that we had the most beautiful location as our canvas.

.

Thank you Tim and Mo for sharing your darling family with me, I had so much fun playing with your kiddos and capturing their tight-knit bond.  Thank you Mark and Susan for giving me the chance to teach Ben a little about photography, I am so glad to have a new little buddy to take pictures with :)  I treasured my time with each one of you and look forward to seeing you again!

Happy Birthday Deacon! | Whatcom Baby Photographer

Happy Birthday Deacon! | Whatcom Baby Photographer

4.png

Year | yir | noun:  The period of 365 days, used for reckoning time in ordinary affairs .

Deacon is a year old today ... a YEAR people.  He is basically about to pack up and move away to college (cue the melodrama ... and the waterworks).

3

In all seriousness though, I'm not sure how we got here.  I can honestly say that I feel like he was born yesterday ... I was tracking my contractions on my nifty little app, alerting family and friends that 'it's go time!', and  getting my last minute Masters picks submitted for the office pool (no joke).  I think it was a mid-contraction frantic pick that cemented my place at the bottom of the leaderboard (no hard feelings though, I got the best prize that Masters weekend had to offer).  I have contemplated this blog post for awhile now, not really sure which direction to go ... so forgive me if I wander.

.

As we come to the end of Deacon's 1st chapter, part of me feels like we haven't been here before - like we are moving into uncharted territory.  But of course we have, with Farah just 2 and a half years ago (a mere 952 days, but who's counting).  The day that you look forward to with excitement and anticipation, but hope and pray will stay off in the distance for awhile because it is also bittersweet.  The day your baby turns one.

.

Time is such a puzzling thing.  How can it feel as though this tiny human was born yesterday, yet at the same time seem as though they have been a part of your life forever?  I keep going back to the definition of a year ... 'the period of 365 days, used for reckoning time in ordinary affairs' and can only come to one conclusion ... Google is obviously not a mother :)  A year is so much more than that!  It is 365 days of self discovery, 365 days of a 'new normal' that occasionally borders on pure insanity (that you wouldn't trade for anything), 365 days filled with laughter as well as tears, 365 days of experiencing the world through the eyes of a child, and 365 amazing days of unadulterated joy and unconditional love.  Days that will never repeat themselves, except in the spirit of memories; locked tight and held safe in your heart for a lifetime.

.

It is inexplicable how fast it goes, and with each passing day I feel like it goes a little faster.  However I take comfort in knowing that we have tomorrow.  Another day of discovery, another day of laughter (and most likely some tears), another day experiencing the world through the eyes of our children, and another amazing day of unadulterated joy and unconditional love.  As for yesterday?  Well, we have the memories - a blessing for which I am forever grateful!  I am so thankful for this little life of ours, for our beautiful and awe-inspiring children, and for a chance to share our joy with each and every person who is a part of our children's stories.  So thank you ... all of you.  You have watched our family grow, supporting and loving us along the way ... truly, thank you.

.

Happy, Happy 1st Birthday to our 'Mister Man', 'Buster Boy', 'Deaky Deaky Deaky'.  Our darling boy whose belly laugh is infectious, loves his sissy the most, is happiest with any sort of ball in his hand, runs and climbs stairs like he's been doing it for years (I have recently pulled 4 grey hairs out of my head, coincidence?  I don't think so ... ), and whose smile is almost too big for the 6-9 month clothes he currently wears :)

.

Thank you Deacon, for the last 365 days, thank you for the next 365, and the next, and the next 366 (I know there is a Leap Year in there somewhere), and thank you sweet boy, for a lifetime of memories!  We love you Deacon Butler!

Lucas-1.jpg

Sweet Lucas, you are beyond adorable and photographing you was such a treat!  I feel like I have known this little guy since before he was born!  Well, technically maybe I have ...you see, I ran into his mama at Target one afternoon and after we chatted for a bit we parted ways to go about our shopping.  As I was heading towards the checkout line, I definitely caught sight of her ... in the maternity/active wear section ... we met eyes, and in that instant I knew ... she wasn't picking up a pair of yoga pants (well maybe maternity yoga pants) and that a little baby was on the way!  Of course I had to wait for an actual announcement a month or so later, but alas my suspicions were confirmed and here we are with a little Lucas :) .

Six months is such a fun age, and getting to photograph this milestone is such a gift; especially for a special family like this one.  Our time together was full of sweet smiles and peek-a-boo games (and maybe just a few tears ... tummy time is for the birds people).  I was so glad to be able to capture Lucas and big sister Ashlynn's adorable bond, there is something so incredible about a sibling relationship ... and it's apparent that big sister is Lucas's favorite :)

.

Thank you Zach and Adele for sharing your darling family with me, I can't wait to see you all again :)

Ordinary Magic | Whatcom Family Photographer

Ordinary Magic | Whatcom Family Photographer

Beach4.jpg

This day! .

There is no way to really describe today and do it justice, it was just an ordinary Sunday that somehow turned magical.  Even as I crawled into bed, exhausted from our sun-soaked afternoon, I couldn't stop smiling ... nor could I stop replaying the events from our beach day in my head, my heart is so full!  So up I got, and here I am ... blogging at 11:00pm (who knew this mom could stay up past 10:00?!)

.

Spring has sprung in the Bennett household, which means the WWU Mens Golf season is in full swing (pun intended) and Daddy spends many weekends in planes, trains (ok not really), and automobiles traveling to golf tournaments as the Mens Golf Coach.  Quite honestly, the golf season is bitter sweet for me - I love that my husband gets to do something that he loves, and watching him pour so much of himself into his alma mater, team, and next generation of young men is inspiring.  The tough part for me is not that I'm going it alone in the parenting world, don't get me wrong, it can be challenging (insert MAJOR props for single parents here, you all are truly amazing) instead my struggle stems from the fact that he might miss something fabulous like first steps (no worries, Deacon is already toddling around) or first swear word (yep, he was there for that too ... thankfully?).  It is for this reason that I LOVE technology - phones, cameras, FaceTime, Facebook, Instagram ... I think I hear the angels singing.  When Daddy is gone, technology and I team up to make sure he feels like he isn't missing anything, even the occasional 3 year old tantrum ;)

.

When the forecast was calling for another glorious day, I packed up the kiddos, grabbed my camera (to document our day for Daddy), and hit the road ... destination: family beach cabin in Anacortes.  I think I will save 'the cabin' for a later post, but suffice it to say - it is a little slice of beachfront heaven that Luke's grandparents purchased decades ago.  Often it is filled to the brim with aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends - but today, it was all ours!

.

We headed straight down to the beach, and it took approximately 4.3 seconds for Farah to dive into the sand.  Running it through her fingers, burying her feet, and even making a sand angel or two (check out the photographic proof on Instagram here) she was in paradise.  Deacon was equally as excited, and all attempts of keeping him content on a blanket quickly proved futile ... he may have eaten more sand than the resident seagulls throughout the day ;)

.

And then it happened.  Sometime between stealing a few pictures with both kids (thanks to my handy dandy wireless remote control) and skipping rocks into the low tide waters, I stopped to drink it all in.  Farah was spinning around arms extended, head tipped towards the sky and Deacon was inspecting a seashell, his little clothes caked with sand.  My heart swelled and I choked back big, happy tears.  This seemingly ordinary moment was in fact nothing short of extraordinary ... it was magical.

.

I am so blessed ... I have so much to be thankful for! And today my partnership with technology while Luke is gone is pretty high on that list.  Not only do I get to keep these moments in my heart for a lifetime, but Luke does too (and you as well) through these images ... Enjoy :)

Half Birthdays are Worth Celebrating! | Whatcom Lifestyle Photographer

Farah5.jpg

With a little one under a year ... we tend to celebrate month birthdays, One Month ... Two Months ... 10 Months.  And it dawned on me as we neared Miss Farah's half birthday, we should be celebrating that too ... because life is worth celebrating, and 3 1/2 years old is a pretty big deal :) The half birthday celebration started while Little Brother was taking his afternoon nap, I told Farah that we could do anything that she wanted to celebrate!  Her list was short but detailed, and did not disappoint!  'First, let's read the letter book (The Jolly Postman) ... then I'd like to make you some soup!  Maybe I could jump on the bed?  And then take a picture with your big camera, I promise I'll be really REALLY careful!'

And that's what we did ... it was magical!

Blog Post

(of course later she got to choose what was for dinner, definitely not our most nutritious meal of the week ... and I made cupcakes for dessert, just to make it half birthday official)

One of the best parts of being a photographer, is when you get to reconnect with friends.  Chrisdee and I have known each other since 6th grade, and we spent much of the session remembering the 'good old days'.  Miss Ellie is the apple of her mommy and daddy's eyes, and was so much fun to spend the crisp fall morning with!
