Hello Nora! | Bellingham Birth Photographer

This little lady had me on pins and needles in the weeks leading up to her birth day, however as the old adage goes 'baby comes when baby's ready' ... and when she was ready, she was ready!  I got the text at about 11:30pm Monday night that Megan and Adam were headed to the hospital.  I waited it out for a bit, thinking that I could get a few hours of sleep before going in myself ... ha.  I didn't get a wink of sleep, I felt like the little boy in the old Disneyland commercials 'I'm too excited to sleep!' After a few progress updates, I decided to gather my gear and drive in to the hospital at about 1:00am. .

I got to the hospital soon after Megan received her epidural and she was settling in to try and get some rest.  I promptly made new friends, as Megan's mom and godparents were also just arriving to wait things out.  I think one thing that is so special about documenting births is what happens during this very special time outside of the actual laboring and delivery.  It was heart warming to see the soon-to-be grandma and grand-godmom (yes, I think I just made that up) sharing stories of days gone by and bursting with pride as they waited to meet the newest addition to the family.

.

Sweet Nora was born just a little after 5:00am on Tuesday and was absolutely perfect.  I stuck around just long enough to capture her being weighed, measured, and get her footprints and then slipped away to let Megan and Adam get to know their little girl.

.

Had you asked me 5 years ago about birth photography, I probably would have turned an unflattering shade of red and tried to change the subject ... but then I had children, and everything changed.  If you asked me today what my #1 goal is as a photographer, I would without a doubt whole-heartedly say to focus on birth photography.  Birth stories are beautiful, they are unique, and they should be celebrated.  I look back on my own birth experiences with such joy, and although I can easily remember the major things that happened during labor, the small details that make each child's birth date so special begin to fade into distant memories.  It is my hope as a birth photographer that I am able to capture these little moments, so they can be remembered as the days, weeks, and years drift on all too quickly.

.

Thank you Megan and Adam for giving me the opportunity to capture Nora's birth, it was a very special day that I will not soon forget.

Right as I was about to leave, Megan's mom said 'Jessie, you need a picture with Megan!' which I just thought was the sweetest gesture ... here we are (and yes, Megan who just gave birth definitely looks better than I do)

I think I have attempted to begin this post about 5 times ... type, read, erase, ponder my feelings, type, read, erase ... the thing is, there are no words that can properly describe how I feel about this session.  As a photographer, a sense of accomplishment - I shot my first birth, and it was nothing short of extraordinary.  As a friend of this sweet lady, a sense of pride - our 25 year friendship has been a constant blessing in my life.  As a mother myself, a sense of amazement - birth is miraculous, magical, and sort of messy ;).  These words aren't enough, but they are a start ... and this is an experience I will carry in my heart forever! Thank you Stacey and George for letting me be a part of this day.  Miss Hannah is such a blessing (as if I needed to tell you that), and I am forever grateful that you allowed me to tell part of her sweet birth story.  xo
